Deventer joins Shelter City

The city of Deventer has joined the Shelter City movement in its mission of providing a safe and inspiring space for human rights defenders at risk.

On 11th April, Andries Heidema, the Mayor of Deventer, signed the agreement for the creation of Shelter City Deventer.

Shelter City Deventer will be coordinated by the municipality, Woon- en Zorgcentrum Humanitas and Saxion Hogeschool. Together they will ensure that human rights defenders have the opportunity to rest, re-energize, strengthen their capacity and safety, so that they can continue their important work.

In September, Shelter City Deventer will receive its first human rights defender.

Deventer has traditionally been internationally oriented and we are committed to human rights.” – Andries Heidema, Mayor of Deventer
