Costa Rica joins Shelter City

Costa Rica joins the Shelter City movement in providing a safe and inspiring space to human rights defenders at risk and becomes the third international Shelter City.

On 5th February the agreement to establish Shelter City Costa Rica was signed. Those present at the signing were Dutch Ambassador to Costa Rica, Peter Derrek Hof, Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Ana Helena Chacón, and Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel González Sanz.

Shelter City Costa Rica will be coordinated by Fundación Acceso, with the support of Hivos and the Dutch Embassy.

Human rights defenders from Central and South America have been facing many security risks. With the creation of Shelter City Costa Rica, they will have the opportunity to relocate to a closeby safe space for three months, re-energize and strengthen their capacity.

Moreover, Costa Rica has a long standing commitment to the protection of human rights, making it an ideal location for a Shelter City.
