The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs shares the story of former Shelter City guest Atoq

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently published an article on former Shelter City guest Atoq, a human rights defender and journalist from Peru.

In 2017 Atoq was seriously injured by the Peruvian police while he was photographing demonstrators in Lima. Despite the physical and psychological consequences of this attack, he continues to report injustices and fight for change.

Atoq spent three months in Shelter City The Hague. Thanks to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we offer additional support to journalists at risk such as Atoq. We provide a safe space for two journalists per year in Shelter City in the Netherlands so that they can continue reporting human rights violations and defending freedom of press and freedom of expression.

The article by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs shares Atoq’s story, from the start of his photography career, to his idea for the creation of a photographers collective and his stay at Shelter City.
