Shelter City Nijmegen partner, Bureau Wijland, invites you to visit Angel’s exhibition “Maasewaal, a look at the contemporary Mayan world” at Bibliotheek Mariënburg Nijmegen. The exhibition is open to the public until 30 November 2023 and admission is free.

Angel is a Mayan indigenous rights defender from México. Through his work, he exposes violence against indigenous groups, protects indigenous cultural heritage and languages, and promotes the preservation of native plant seeds. Angel is also vocal about his opposition to the ‘Maya train’, a railway megaproject led by the Mexican government, which is causing environmental destruction on indigenous territories, leading to large swathes of rainforest being destroyed and indigenous communities displaced.

In his work, Angel collaborates with the U Kúuchil K Ch’i’ibalo’on community centre, a place where the Mayan culture, identity, language, and world view are preserved. To support this community centre, Shelter City Nijmegen is currently accepting donations aimed at the protection of the Mayan language and culture in Mexico.
