Shelter City guests Graciela and Brigitte join the Amsterdam Pride

Graciela, a Mexican human rights defender and Brigitte, a Senegalese human rights defender, joined Amsterdam Pride on the 4th August.

Amsterdam Pride is one of the biggest pride celebrations worldwide. This year’s theme is “Heroes” and it aims at encouraging people to stand up for human rights and to spread awareness.

Graciela and Brigitte were both invited by Amnesty International Netherlands to take part in the Pride march on their boat, which focuses on raising awareness on the shrinking space for LGBTIQ+ activists worldwide.

Their participation in the Amsterdam Pride also included a workshop with many other human rights defenders organized by Amnesty International and Greenpeace. It was an opportunity for them to share their experience and strengthen their skills.

Moreover, Brigitte participated in a speed dating session that allowed human rights defenders to engage with a variety of organizations. The session was organized by COC Netherlands, the municipality of Amsterdam, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland. Justice & Peace also took part in the event and presented Shelter City.

Gracela and Brigitte shared that they had really enjoyed their participation in the Pride and the festive vibe of Amsterdam.
