LGBTIQ+ rights defenders

LGBTIQ+ rights defenders are human rights defenders working on issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics. They can also work on topics such as access to healthcare and sexual and reproductive health and the rights and safety of sex workers. Their work aims to enhance respect, dignity, equality and promotes a world free from violence and discrimination for LGBTIQ+ communities.

Unfortunately, different social and political contexts in many countries around the world make it incredibly difficult for LGBTIQ+ rights defenders to stand up for their rights and the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community safely.  They often face threats and risks due to their line of work but they are also targeted simply because of their identity. 

LGBTIQ+ rights defenders contribute to a world where equality is respected and upheld, where everyone can live in freedom from violence and discrimination, and where everyone can be themselves regardless of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).
