Former Shelter City guest Özgür Gür receives the Freedom from Fear Award

Today, 21 April, ÜniKuir, the organization co-founded by former Shelter City Amsterdam guest Özgür Gür will receive one of the Four Freedoms Awards.

The Four Freedoms Awards are presented every year to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to the principle of Four Freedoms by US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The awards presented are: Freedom of Speech Award, Freedom of Workship Award, Freedom from Want Award, Freedom from Fear Award and an International Four Freedoms Award.

This year the Freedom from Fear Award is won by ÜniKuir, a Turkish LGBTIQ+ non-governmental organization. It is the first time an LGBTIQ+ organization wins a Four Freedom Award.

ÜniKuir fights for equal rights regardless of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. It provides guidance, organizes gatherings for the LGBTIQ+ community and connects LGBTIQ+ student organizations across Turkey.

ÜniKuir was co-founded by Özgür Gür, a LGBTIQ+ human rights defender and a guest of Shelter City Amsterdam in 2021.

We at Shelter City congratulate ÜniKuir and Özgür Gür on this achievement and on their important work in defending the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community in Turkey.
