Visit Maastricht for a week of inspiring activities and a celebration of human rights achievements

Shelter City Maastricht partners, Mondiaal Maastricht, the municipality of Maastricht, and Maastricht University, invite you to Maastricht Human Rights Week, taking place from 22 – 26 May.

Maastricht Human Rights Week commemorates two key events in 2023 – the 175th anniversary of the Dutch Constitution and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During the week a wide range of activities centered around human rights for all ages are planned across the city.

As part of Maastricht Human Rights Week, students of Maastricht University in collaboration with Justice & Peace Netherlands and Mondiaal Maastricht have organized the #WeAreAllHumanRightsDefenders gallery showcasing former Shelter City Maastricht guests and local human rights defenders and organizations in Maastricht. The exhibition will be made available online here and in person at Het BeiHuis, Brusselse Poort shopping centre in Maastricht from 23 May – 18 July.

On Tuesday, 23 May at 18.30, we will celebrate Shelter City night at the Law Faculty of Maastricht University in the company of several human rights experts. Together with Roland Moerland, Director of the Human Rights Centre, and Judge Alapini-Gansou of the International Criminal Court, Sebastiaan van der Zwaan, Director of Justice & Peace Netherlands and a Shelter City guest will discuss the challenges faced by human rights defenders and explore potential solutions.

Activities during this week strive to inspire others to join the effort for a more just world.
