Celebrating 10 years together
Dear Shelter City friends and partners,
We are excited to celebrate with you 10 years of Shelter City and Shelter City The Hague.
Ten years together
Shelter City was founded by human rights organization Justice & Peace Netherlands in 2012 and since then, it has grown to become a global movement of 21 cities, more than 300 individuals and 100 organizations standing side by side with human rights defenders at risk.
Together, we have welcomed more than 400 human rights defenders. We have offered them the necessary spaces for them to temporarily leave a challenging environment, to rest and re-energize, receive tailormade support, and engage with local allies. We have supported our guests during and after their stay and they have left a mark in our local communities.
We want to thank all of you who stand side by side with human rights defenders and support our work.
Ten years of Shelter City The Hague
Alongside our 10-year anniversary, we also celebrate the birthplace of Shelter City, The Hague. Shelter City The Hague was the first Shelter City started by Justice & Peace in 2012 in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of The Hague, and it has made great impact ever since.
Shelter City The Hague has hosted 36 human rights defenders coming from more than 25 countries, ranging from Latin America to Western Africa, Russia, Palestine and Afghanistan. Since 2021, Shelter City The Hague in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides two additional safe spaces to journalists at risk so that they can continue reporting on human rights, freedom of press or expression away from dangers.
The Hague has offered guests many opportunities to expand their solidarity network. The city hosts an active network of civil society organizations, international organizations such as the International Criminal Court, policy makers, students and a pervasive culture of human rights and justice.
Throughout the year we will celebrate the ten-year anniversary of Shelter City The Hague with our local partners in the city. To start off the celebration, from 20th April to 20th May the Shelter City outdoor exhibition will be on display at Turfmarkt outside of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Celebrate with us
Shelter City would not be possible without you. We thank all of you who stand side by side with human rights defenders and support their work.
