Indigenous rights defenders stand up for the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples, the protection of their lands and territories and the preservation of their culture, language, and way of life. Their work can also entail voicing opposition to projects developed by extractive industries or large infrastructure projects such as hydro-power that large corporations or governments are responsible for initiating.

Due to the status of indigenous peoples in many countries, indigenous rights defenders often lack official protection by state institutions. Similar to environmental rights defenders, indigenous rights defenders face constant threats to their lives (IWGIA, 2019). These threats can be physical or legal, and include criminalization, discrimination, harassment, attacks and violence.

Indigenous rights defenders uphold the rights of indigenous peoples and hold responsible actors accountable for their actions. They are vital to the preservation of indigenous territories and land, ancient cultures and knowledge. They must supported and provided the required protection to be able to continue their work safely and efficiently.
