Leipzig

In 2025, the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) and the City of Leipzig committed to their joint values of protecting journalists and media workers at risk by joining the Shelter City movement. ECPMF has been running its temporary relocation and protection programme, Journalists-in-Residence, since its establishment in 2015.

Leipzig is a beautiful, green city in eastern Germany and a symbol of peaceful revolution. The city played a crucial role in the fall of the Berlin Wall and inspired a nationwide movement for freedom and democratic change.

Our support

Rest and respite

We provide a safe space for journalists and media workers under threat, allowing them to continue their investigations, develop new projects or take a break from the stressful work environment. This includes furnished accommodation, a monthly stipend for living expenses and health insurance.

Individual support

During their stay, journalists can attend language courses, psychotherapy sessions in their preferred language, as well as professional journalism-related training. Fellows can use ECPMF’s office as a workspace if needed. Additionally, the Journalists-in-Residence team provides daily support to each fellow.

Personal advocacy

Our fellows can use ECPMF‘s platforms to highlight their personal and professional situation, as well as the situation in their countries and the topics that they are working on.
