Celebrating 5 years of Shelter City Rotterdam

On 3 June, Shelter City Rotterdam celebrated its fifth anniversary of hosting and supporting human rights defenders at risk with Shelter City guests, partners, and many of its allies at the Bibliotheektheater in Rotterdam.
Over the past five years, this vital initiative in Rotterdam, coordinated by Humanitas Rotterdam and bolstered by the support of the municipality of Rotterdam, has provided a safe space for individuals who tirelessly advocate for human rights in their home countries. This milestone marks not only a significant period of sustained effort and commitment but also a testament to the city’s dedication to global human rights and social justice.
Since its inception, Shelter City Rotterdam has welcomed numerous human rights defenders from around the world, offering them a safe and inspiring space where they can rest, re-energize, and regain their strength to continue their work. These individuals, often facing extreme threats and challenges in countries such as the Philippines, Colombia, Nigeria, and Kyrgyzstan, find in Rotterdam a supportive environment that allows them to temporarily escape the pressures and dangers they encounter in their work. The programme has created a unique space for them to connect with local allies, share their stories, and continue their important work in a secure and encouraging setting.
“That’s what we try to do here in Rotterdam – you can be yourself.”
Faouzi Achbar – Alderman for Welfare, Society, Sports & Digital Inclusion
The success of Shelter City Rotterdam over the past five years highlights the strength of community and collaboration. The partnership between Humanitas Rotterdam and the municipality of Rotterdam, as well as other local partners, has been instrumental in ensuring that human rights defenders have the resources and support they need.
